Top 7 Ways to Conserve Your Phone’s Battery Life
You wake up and probably start the day thinking, “Hey, it’s a good day to take a selfie today.” Twenty-five bathroom selfies, three lunch photos, and a groupie later, your phone’s on the verge of losing power. “What happened?” you wonder. It isn’t even the middle of the afternoon and yet here you are charging your iPhone or iPad – again.
As a member of a tech-savvy generation, you feel like there are days when you can’t survive without your Apple gadget. Probably because of social norms that you’ve adopted as habits – browsing social networking sites, binge-watching lolcat videos on YouTube, or playing the latest game app. These activities are popularly known to quickly leech power from your iPhone’s battery.
Unfortunately, there are a number of other processes that can really drain your iPhone’s power. Here are the top ways you can save precious battery life. Here are the top ways you can save precious battery life.
- Disable wireless functions
Wireless functions include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Location Services for apps (especially social media apps). These processes can consume more battery than your phone’s battery can handle. Conserve your phone’s battery life by turning these features off when not in use. Toggle them off in the Settings menu soon as you’re done using them. For Wi-Fi, if you are connecting to familiar networks, you can turn off Ask to Join Network at Settings > Wi-Fi – this can also help you keep your iPhone powered up for more important uses.
- Disable auto-brightness.
You don’t need your phone’s display to shine full-force when you’re outside, or when you’re in dark areas, as having the display brightness turned up all the way directs more power to your display. To switch off Auto-Brightness, go to Settings > Brightness and Wallpaper > Auto-Brightness and slide that switch to the left Once the Auto-Brightness feature is deactivated, you can dim the display’s backlight as far as your eyes can tolerate.
- Idle apps
We’re particularly talking about the Music App or any other audio-playing apps like 8tracks or Spotify. Although listening to music while you work is definetly entertaining, you have to exit these apps if you want to conserve your phone’s battery juice. Some apps remain active even after you press the Home button. You have to use a five-finger gesture to slide the screen upwards, shift from available apps that are displayed onscreen, choose the app you want to close, and drag it upwards to close it.
- Push notifications / app updates
Notifications can give us updates on what is happening in your social or personal life. However, frequent pop-ups on your iPhone or iPad actually drain your battery faster, as these notifications require your device to vibrate or sound off. Regulation is key – make Fetch happen (get the Mean Girls reference there?). Fetch keeps tabs on all your notifications and tips you off at a set time. To activate this feature, go to Settings > Mail, Contact, Calendars > Accounts > Fetch New Data. Choose the app you want to activate Fetch with and set the time you want it to deliver your notifications. #MakeFetchHappen
- Parallax
When iOS 7 first came out, this is actually the one feature that was a little difficult to appreciate. At first, it was cool seeing your icons like they’re on different planes. And that’s about it. Deactivate the feature, if you want to save juice. Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Reduce Motion.
- LTE / 4G
Ahh, the best feature service providers can give you. Unfortunately, this is one of the functions that can leech your battery’s powerthe fastest, as it lets you enjoy clearer calls and faster data speeds. Toggle the feature off by heading to Settings > General > Cellular > Enable 3G.
- Camera App
Reality check: you don’t need to take 35 selfies in a single day; what you need is for your iPhone’s battery to last the entire day. The Camera app is undeniably one of the top power drainers for your device. If you do need to use your device’s camera, make sure you capture more important moments like hanging out with friends (#groupie), that breathtaking view of the beach, or a potential viral Vine post. Trust me, that will give you more memories to look back on and more battery power to enjoy.
